A Marine handler and his troops operative dog took partial in an complete foe during a War Dog Weekend. (Photo: Maria Goodavage)

This weekend gave me a new viewpoint on a tenure “weekend warrior.” we was propitious adequate to be invited to a weekend full of troops operative dog organisation events on a drift of a Mar Field Air Museum in Riverside, Calif. It was put together by Feed a Dawgs, an enterprising organisation of mostly Vietnam-era troops dog handlers who wish to yield active-duty dog handlers with a honour and appreciation they did not generally receive.

The “Dawgs” go to 18 troops kennels in a Southwest to yield approval (and beef feasts) to active-duty handlers. Last year some volunteers gathering adult to 3,700 sum miles for these sojourns, on their possess dime. The organisation gets some financial contributions, though there’s a lot of digging low into their possess pockets to keep creation this support happen.

(They could use some financial help. FYI they’re not a non-profit. “We’re totally and entirely unprofitable,” says former handler J.M. Hemp, who heads many of a events. we know how most it contingency cost to put on these events. we was in assign of prepping many dozens of steaks this weekend, and any bag had a pricetag of about $90 on it. If we wish to assistance out, click on a Contact page to send an email Hemp. He says he’s certain conclude anything we can do.)

This weekend’s events captivated handlers from all services. About 150 dined on a vast beef BBQ, and several took partial in an sparkling Iron Dog Competition, that featured all from a picturesque barrier march to a “bad guy” unfolding to smell showing to a unequivocally exhausting run where handlers had to lift their dogs on their backs. It finished with a yield by a sand tunnel. I’ve seen these dogs do a good understanding during a investigate for my stirring book, Soldier Dogs, though we was wowed by a teams’ abilities on this unequivocally severe competition.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from a competition, and some reward puppy photos from a event. If we wish to see some-more we can go to a event album during my Soldier Dogs Facebook page. Enjoy!

A bond between handler and dog is like no other. Here Marine Cpl. Jonathan T. Overland with his Belgian Malinois, Ccann P255, from Camp Cann/Camp Pendleton, have a small still time together before a Iron Dog Competition. The organisation would go on to win a day’s “Top Dog” esteem for best altogether foe performance. Ccann was named after Camp Pendleton USMC Sgt. Adam L. Cann, who was killed in movement in Iraq in 2006. You can review most some-more about Sgt. Cann in Nicole Arbelo’s book, K9 Heroes, that explores stories of MWD teams, mostly from handlers’ perspectives. (Photo: Maria Goodavage)

Ccann and Overland, finished with a course. They would turn a “top dog” leader of a competition. Note how Ccann is once again checking in with Overland. That kind of tacit communication is a hallmark of a good team. (Photo: Maria Goodavage)

There’s zero like using with a dog on your behind to unequivocally exam strength and endurance. Here, Marine Cpl.
